Story of the Rubik's Cube Since the 1980s
So whats been happening to the Rubik's Cube since the 1980’s? Well, a large number of die hard fans have kept the Rubik's Cube alive! Currently, it is estimated there are over 300 million Rubik's Cube to have been sold worldwide – rumour has it that were all the Rubiks Cube be stacked on top of each other they would reach the top of Mount Everest, not once, but twice! The largest of the cubes lives in Knoxville Tennessee and stands at an incredible 3 meters tall and weighs in at over 500kg – surely not an easy Rubiks Cube to solve!! So arguably the Rubik's Cube has never been away. Now more than just a standard cube, the addition of the Rubiks Cube, Rubik’s Sudoku Puzzle, Rubik’s Revenge, the Rubik’s Mini Cube and Professional Cube, the Rubiks Brain Racker, the Rubiks Twist Puzzle, to name but a few are more than enough to keep puzzle enthusiasts challenged!
The act of solving Rubiks Cube is known as ‘cubing’. Some cubaholics pay a high price for their love of the cube – many have been known to suffer from wrist and thumb problems trying to be the fastest solving the cube, so be warned about this potential health hazard! To honour some of the world’s best cubaholics, national and international championships have been held since 2003. To celebrate 25 years of the Rubix Cube, the 2007 championships were held in Budapest, the birth place of the Rubik’s Cube and were attended by the creator himself Erno Rubik. Having created the first cube, firstly known as the ‘magic cube’ in 1974, he is now enjoying his well earned retirement!
The current record for solving the standard 3x3x3 Rubiks Cube stands at an amazing 8.72 seconds and is held by a Japanese ethusiast. The larger cube (5x5x5) is the hardest to solve and has a slower world record of 1 minute 45 seconds. The 4x4x4x cube has a record set at around 50 seconds.
